Overview

Progressive discipline – or corrective action – is an integral part of a performance management system. The process is equally applicable in both union and non-union workplaces. The major difference is that, in a union workplace, an employee has access to the grievance and arbitration process. In this unit, you will learn about the elements of progressive discipline, including when and how to implement it in the workplace.

At the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Describe what progressive discipline is and what it entails
  • Recognize when to implement progressive discipline
  • Identify the steps necessary for progressive discipline
  • Note the benefits of progressive discipline
  • Identify when and how to shift from progressive discipline to employee termination
